The Best Homemade Granola

I know that's a bold statement but I am going to stand behind it.

I buy a lot of the same basics at the grocery each week (eggs, Greek yogurt, lunchmeat, granola, etc.).  When I see these trends develop it makes me wonder if I can make any of these things on my own to save a few bucks.
And since we don't have any chickens (though that would save us A LOT of money), granola was the next best option.

Turns out granola is SUPER easy to make at home, easily adaptable and way cheaper than buying it.
Not too mention you know exactly what is in it and we all know I love that.
This recipe makes a full gallon bag and lasts me for about 2 weeks.

I've played around with a few different recipes lately but I think I've finally mastered my favorite.
The following is a mix of this one this one and what I had in my pantry.

This recipe is for clumpy, slightly hard, crispy granola.
If you like yours not so crispy, you'll want to stir it more while it's baking.
But I personally love it super clumpy and crispy.

Homemade Granola
5 cups old fashioned oats
2 cups crushed corn flakes
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup melted butter
1 cup craisins
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon salt
1 beaten egg white

2 baking sheets
parchment paper

*optional items to add : coconut flakes, chocolate chips, raisins, chopped nuts, dried fruit, pumpkin seeds
1.  Preheat oven to 300*
2. Mix all of you ingredients, except egg white, together until everything is well coated
3.  Once well coated, add egg white and toss to coat
4.  Divide mixture between two parchment paper lined cookie sheets in a thin layer
5.  Bake granola for 45 minutes.  Resist the urge to open the oven, stir the granola or touch it! I promise, it's for the best.
6.  When 45 minutes is up, turn the oven off and leave the granola in there for at least 3 hours, over night if you can.
7.  Once cooled and out of the oven, break up that crispy, delicious granola and store in an airtight container or bag. Like I said, this makes a TON and keeps for at least 2 weeks.  Maybe longer but I always eat it all by then.

Enjoy!

  3. You're so thrifty! But making your own is kind of handy, because it takes me ages to look at all the boxes of granola at the store and pick out the one that has just the combination of flavors/ingredients I like...

  6. YUM> I am going to need to try this. I am allergic to flaxseed and most recipes call for it, so I am happy to see one that doesn't!!

  12. I have been totally wanting to try this, but all of the recipes I have found so far have had a few weird ingredients. But this one looks super simple. Do you think you could make it without the corn flakes?
